Since taking office in December of 2023, one of the most common complaints levied by residents has been about traffic safety. Through conversations in his Office, and during eight Town Hall meetings in 2024, Mayor Alves spoke with dozens of residents about speeding concerns in their neighborhoods. He has since committed to improving conditions at intersections, which has been ongoing through the placement of stop signs and flashing lights, and committed to increasing speeding enforcement by continuing to grow and strengthen the Danbury Police Department.

“We’re proud to see that our investment and commitment to keeping Danbury residents safe has begun to prove itself,” said Mayor Alves. “A 50% increase in traffic enforcement is a huge step towards stopping the violations on our streets and making our communities safer. As a driver and a father, I recognize that this is a major improvement, but still not enough. We’re going to continue strengthening our police department, ramping up our traffic enforcement, and ensuring anyone who drives in our City has the safety of our roads and residents in mind.”

The Danbury Police Department’s Uniformed Services Bureau is primarily responsible for traffic enforcement. It includes the Patrol Division, Community Conditions and Traffic Units. Its mission is to preserve peace, protect life and property through fair and impartial enforcement of criminal and traffic laws. Through its dedication, professionalism and proactive approach, the officers and supervisors assigned to this bureau work tirelessly and collaboratively to uphold public trust and deliver exceptional service to all residents, businesses, and visitors. By focusing on accident prevention, impaired driving, speeding, and other traffic-related violations, we create a safer driving environment for all residents, visitors, and commuters.

"We are encouraged by this success, and remain committed to reducing accidents and promoting responsible driving," said Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour. "The Danbury Police Department will continue to prioritize the safety of our streets, with the goal of further reducing accidents and fostering a safer driving environment for everyone. Increased traffic enforcement also serves as a deterrent to those who may come here to commit other crimes. We greatly appreciate the support from Mayor Alves and his administration in providing the staffing and resources for this initiative."
