Day Without Immigrants Rally Planned for Danbury

In connection with a national rally, community groups are planning a rally in the Hat City in support of the city's immigrant community.

DANBURY, CT — A Day Without Immigrants rally is being planned for May 1 in connection with a nationwide rally in support of immigrants, CT Students For A Dream announced Monday. The “NO HATE IN HAT CITY: March for Immigrant Rights and Worker Rights” rally will begin at the Danbury Library Plaza at 4 p.m., and will continue on to Kennedy Park.

"On this day, we are proclaiming that: Danbury should be a welcoming city for all, Workers rights are immigrants rights, immigrants rights are workers rights, all Danbury residents deserve to live a life with dignity and without fear, All Danbury residents deserve the right to bargain collectively for a living wage," read a media release Monday.

A similar February rally drew hundreds of supporters outside of Danbury City Hall. Over two dozen Danbury businesses shuttered their doors during the event. Videos at the scene show hundreds of people gathered outside of City Hall supporting the rally.

Reports from the scene indicated the protests were peaceful.

Several community groups will be participating in the march including SEIU 32BJ, AFT Connecticut, CT Students for a Dream, Danbury Justice Network, UAW Región 9A, Frente Unido De Inmigrantes Ecuatorianos de CT among others, according to the release.
