Downtown on City Council's Plate

The City Council is moving forward its efforts to revitalize downtown during its meeting tonight.

The Main Street revitalization process will move forward today when the City Council considers an ordinance to form a "Downtown Revitalization Zone" and creating a committee to then review that ordinance.

The goal is to take a good downtown and make it better, said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton. The committee will be made of people who have expertise and knowledge about downtown or people who are already serving on boards involved with downtown.

"The first step was the task force report," Boughton said. That report was delivered to the city and made public at the annual Leadership Luncheon in December. During that meeting the city and Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce award the Cecil Previdi Award to the city's top entrepreneur and the mayor delivers the State of the City address. "Now we consider the ordinance that creates the commission."

The commission is the Danbury Main Street Partnership, which is also known as the Downtown Revitalization Commission. The long-term goal of the plan is to revitalize and attract businesses to downtown Danbury. Part of the city's task force report also called for revitalizing the city's Director of Economic Development office.
