Kiwanis Kids Elementary Program Promotes Love of BUGs
Students at South Street Elementary love BUGs- Bring Up Grades, or as students know it, 'the BUG program'.

From Kiwanis Club: The BUG program is at South Street School. Each year, Kiwanis members and community business people address the students from the 5th Grade classrooms sharing their experiences, challenges and rewards of various professions. Kiwanis Kids Program coordinator, Maura Juan says the goal is,
“To open up the world for children and show them a wide array of career paths, and to help them focus on a specific goal to obtain results in their own studies.”
Each student selects a subject to bring up their grade from the previous marking period while maintaining their other grades. Teachers work with them to achieve this goal.
Recipients are placed on the BUG Honor Roll and receive an award certificate at a ceremony hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Danbury.
As added treats this year, students will be treated to a special performance by musical artist and storyteller Les Julian on April 19th.
The beauty of the BUG program is that it encourages students to focus on making one small accomplishment at a time. Maura Juan says,
“When a child reaches his/her self determined goal, it promotes a sense of accomplishment, which motivates them to continue achieving.”
Students with straight A’s are recognized for their continued achievement and for providing outstanding support to classmates who then achieve their goals. These individuals are honored as Super BUGs for going above and beyond to provide support and assistance.
