Obituary: Ugo J. Damia, 91, Of Danbury, Pianist & Music Teacher

DANBURY, CT — Ugo J. Damia died in Danbury on March 22, 2024.

Born in Yonkers, NY on April 4, 1932, to Fulvio and Eulalia Esther Damia, he moved to Danbury at the age of 7. A graduate of Danbury High school, he went on to attend Rollins College, Winter Park, FL and graduated from Manhattan School of Music in 1950 with a bachelor's and master's degree in piano performance. An accomplished pianist, he has given concerts in France, Germany, City Center New York and Richter Arts, Danbury.

Ugo served in active duty in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958 in Nancy, France.

After his discharge he earned his Sixth Year Certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University and worked on his Ph.D degree in Music at Columbia.

Ugo taught music appreciation at Benjamin Franklin High School in NYC and for 35 years at Katonah-Lewisboro Jr./Sr. High School, Cross River, NY.

After his retirement, he became a realtor for 10 years. He enjoyed meeting people and was particularly pleased when he was able to make their dream come true. He is remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and a loyal friend. Always gentle, thoughtful, and kind he had many interests beyond his professional career. Cooking for the family and preparing homemade pasta especially at holiday time, was always something the family looked forward to.

He was a passionate lover of music, opera, museums, and theater. He loved to share his love of the piano with family and friends. In addition to visiting his relatives in Rome, Italy, he treasured that time spent with his extended family. He loved to travel, and with Joan, visited many countries around the globe enjoying diversified landscapes, architecture and cultures.

Ugo was a former board member of the Danbury Music Center and a member of the Ridgewood Country Club. Ugo’s pride and joy was his family.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan, his beloved sons Fulvio (Anna) and Jeffrey (Jeanne) and his cherished granddaughter Heather. Also, his dear brother A. Peter (Bonnie) and his delightful niece Alicia (Renato) Ghio.

Ugo will be missed dearly.

The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9 Granville Ave., Danbury on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services and interment will be private.
