Saturday is Clean City Danbury Day

The city will place dumpsters and workers at five locations Saturday, and people can throw away that stuff that accomulated over the last year.

The trick is to arrive early. The day starts at 8 a.m., but cars line up before 7 a.m. at most locations. They can dump early, and with a little luck, get in a second trip before the event closes at 1 p.m.

The five locations are:

City Hall (155 Deer Hill Avenue)

Rogers Park (by tennis courts)

Mill Ridge Intermediate School (1 School Ridge Rd.)

Public Works Building (53 Newtown Rd.)

P.A.L. Building (35 Hayestown Rd.)

In addition to throwing away your own stuff, the city is looking for volunteers to work on Saturday with teams in special neighborhoods.

"There are many areas throughout the city that need attention," said in a press release. "Some are in need of a serious clean-up."

Boughton said the city has fewer volunteers this year, and it could use more. Volunteers are given garbage bags, safety vests and other equipment to pick up trash.

On the best year for teams, 113 teams signed up in 2009. That number fell to 73 in 2010 and about 50 teams signed up in 2011. There is no count available yet for this year. This annual event, now in its ninth year, brings together residents for a day of trash collection throughout the city. 

Individuals are asked to register to volunteer with the Mayor’s Office by calling 203-797-4511.

Please keep in mind that the following items will not be accepted:

• NO ELECTRONICS (these are now accepted for free year-round at the recycle center on White St.)
• NO Hazardous Waste (Hazardous Waste Day is in September)
• NO Grass clippings or yard debris
• NO Construction debris

 In addition, residents taking advantage of the free dumping must keep Scrap Metal, Tires and White Appliances containing freon separate from other garbage. The city sells scrap metal to defray the cost of the event.
