WCSU In Danbury Launches New Master's Degrees In Music Education, Jazz

Western Connecticut State University introduces new Master of Music programs in Music Education and Jazz Pedagogy, starting Fall 2025.

DANBURY, CT — Western Connecticut State University has announced the launch of two new Master of Music degree programs in Music Education and Jazz Pedagogy, with classes set to begin in the fall of 2025. Applications for both programs are now open.

The 30-credit programs are designed for working professionals, offering hybrid coursework to provide flexibility. The Music Education concentration is intended for K-12 music educators seeking to maintain certification while advancing their careers. The Jazz Pedagogy concentration is tailored for performers and educators looking to deepen their expertise in jazz performance, research, and instruction.

“For almost 30 years, WestConn has offered a Master of Science in Music Education, and it has been very successful,” said Dr. Jeremy Wiggins, coordinator of choral activities and graduate studies, in a news release. “Many Connecticut music educators have earned their M.S. from WCSU. In 2019, we decided to revamp the program to better accommodate working professionals, especially those with young families, by offering a more flexible format.”

According to Wiggins, the revised structure includes online classes in the afternoons and evenings during the fall and spring semesters. In-person coursework, such as conducting and music methods, will be offered during two-week summer intensive sessions. Most students can complete the program within two years.

The Jazz Pedagogy program aims to support improvising musicians seeking teaching experience, as well as music educators working in K-12 school districts, independent schools, and private or group lesson settings.

“The program will strengthen their performing and pedagogy skills specific to jazz—an American art form—and is centered on strategies and techniques for teaching students at different age and ability levels,” said Dr. Jimmy Greene, professor of music and co-coordinator of jazz studies. “This will be the first Jazz Pedagogy master’s degree of its kind in the Northeast, and with our proximity to New York City, students will have access to a vibrant professional jazz community.”

Wiggins noted that affordability is a key factor distinguishing WCSU’s new programs.

“Music teachers can receive a quality education at a reasonable price in our state-of-the-art facilities,” he said. “We have excellent classrooms, performance spaces, a recording studio supporting commercial music-making, and an experienced faculty. Both degrees are built on the philosophy that our courses provide practical tools for educators.”
