DARIEN, CT — If you’re like many of your Darien neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Darien area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- Person To Person: Dedicated to promoting equitable access to economic improvement. The nonprofit offers food assistance, clothing and care, financial coaching, emergency assistance, scholarships and camperships.
- Darien Nature Center: Aims to inspire passion and respect for the natural world through nature education, hands-on experiences with nature, and environmental action and stewardship.
- Darien Depot: Supports the well-being of the town's youth by giving them opportunities to connect, grow and give back.
- The Community Fund of Darien: This organization has granted over $28 million to local nonprofits and community initiatives since 1951. Local investments target basic needs, community health, youth success and workforce development.
- Darien Book Aid: This nonprofit is dedicated to improving the world through literacy and education. Darien Book Aid donates hand-selected books to communities in need.
