"The United States Constitution, America’s most important document, stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights," the DAR said in an announcement.

Constitution Week is observed annually to highlight the document’s historical significance and continuing relevance.

The celebration was initiated by the DAR, which petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside the week for the observance. Congress approved the resolution, and it was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.

According to the DAR, the goals of Constitution Week are to emphasize citizens’ responsibility to protect and defend the Constitution, to highlight its role as the foundation of American heritage, and to encourage study of the events leading to its framing in September 1787.

The local DAR encourages community members to take advantage of the week to learn more about the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees.
