Letter to the Tweed-New Haven Airport Authority. Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

Good afternoon Everyone, this is your Captain speaking. I put together an HVN "wish-list" in hopes of improving your Airport experience.

⚠️WARNING: The Captain of this airliner IS NOT a resident of East Haven. Why should they have an opinion about Tweed-New Haven Airport?

I recently submitted the following prepared statement to the Tweed-New Haven Airport Airport Authority on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 during the regular monthly meeting.

My connection to HVN is not just a personal, hometown connection, but a professional one. As such, my opinions on Tweed Airport, it’s operations and facilities are pertinent, relevant and have the added weight of being safety related. My profession and decades of aviation experience credential me as a subject-matter expert.

In submitting the following suggestions, please know that I am not suggesting the absence of these various technologies and procedures makes Tweed unsafe. All of my recommendations to the Airport Authority are the “best that money can buy” recommendations and ones many airports do not have either. That said, I feel these are the kinds of improvements HVN travelers deserve.

In forthcoming contributions to East Haven Patch, I will elaborate in some detail what each technology is and how it conveys to aviation safety.

The City of New Haven, Avports & TNHAA have not just heard...but they have listened to neighbor concerns.

They have provided tangible benefits to the surrounding East Shore including advanced aircraft tracking, noise monitoring, flight delay communication, sound proofing of homes, air quality monitoring, in-home air purifiers and various other green initiatives.

I suppose it's gift giving season? Yet, not surprisingly, this long and expensive list of actions hasn't done much to quel certain neighbor concerns, as complaints and criticisms still abound.

Missing from the gift giving are the 680,000 people who depend on Tweed as departing passengers. No more. The aforementioned initiatives seem to do nothing more than rile 10,000 Vipers. Never mind them.

I am asking for the best that safety and technology have to offer...on behalf of the 680,000 annual departing Tweed airtravelers.

As HVN's most vocal pilot (a title I would gadly surrender), I'm here to present a list that these 680,000 would demand:

✔️Class C Airspace designation.

✔️RNAV SID RUNWAY 2. (Area Navigation Standard Instrument Departure)

✔️RNAV CVFP RUNWAY 20. (Area Navigation Charted Visual Flight Procedure)

✔️CALM WIND PREFERENTIAL RUNWAY 20.

✔️LLWAS. (Low Level Windshear Alert System)

✔️SMGCS. (Surface Movement Guidance System)

■TAXIWAY CENTERLINE LIGHTING/ REFLECTORS.

■RUNWAY GUARD LIGHTS

■RUNWAY CENTERLINE LIGHTS

■TOUCHDOWN ZONE LIGHTS

■ASDE-X (Airport Surface Detection Equipment)

✔️REIL LIGHTS RUNWAY 2 & 20 (Runway End Identifier Lights)

✔️ALS RUNWAY 20. (Approach Lighting System)

✔️ALS UPGRADE RUNWAY 2.

✔️ASR-9 REMOTE SITE. (Airport Surveillance Radar)

✔️EXTENDED ATCT HOURS. (Air Traffic Control Tower)

✔️ACARS/PDC/CLEARANCE DELIVERY FREQ. (Aircraft Communications And Reporting System/Pre-Departure Clearance)

✔️EFFICIENT & UNRESTRICTED AIRSIDE SURFACE OPERATIONS.

It's time that the entities responsible for running HVN, not just listen, but pay very close attention to the needs of the 680,000 annual emplaned passengers and those who champion their interests.
