Motorcyclist In Critical Condition After Colliding With Car On Coe Ave. Monday: East Haven PD

EAST HAVEN, CT — A motorcycle crash Monday afternoon at Coe and Austin avenues left the driver, who witnesses told police was speeding, with serious injuries and in critical condition, according to East Haven police spokesperson Capt. Joseph M. Murgo.

It was 3:25 p.m. when East Haven first responders were dispatched to the area of Coe Avenue and Austin Avenue for a motorcycle versus car accident and found a "motorcycle driver
sustained significant head and leg injuries," Murgo said.

He was treated on scene by East Haven Fire Department medics before being taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said. The driver of the involved car stayed on the scene and "cooperating fully" with the investigation, Murgo said.

According to police, that investigation, "supported by resident video and witness statements," found that the motorcycle driver was traveling above the 25 MPH speed limit on Coe Avenue. Murgo said that witnesses also reported the motorcycle passed another vehicle traveling northbound on Coe in the area of Austin Avenue, "At a high rate of speed, and collided with a vehicle turning left on to Austin Avenue from Coe Avenue."

The driver of the car was taken to Yale for treatment of minor injuries and has since been released.

Coe Avenue was shut down for several hours while the South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit, Regional Accident Reconstruction Team, conducted its investigation.
