Somers Appoints a New Tax Collector

Sherri Czyz, a former executive director for a Vernon business, assumed the role as the new tax collector earlier this month.

Somers has appointed a new tax collector from the private sector.

The Town of Somers announced Sherri Czyz began her new job as tax collector on Oct. 1. She replaces Donna Doyker, who stepped down as tax collector earlier this year to run for first selectman.

A resident of Ellington, Czyz previously served as executive director for Hockanum Industries in Vernon. There she was responsible for day-to-day operations, including implementing policies and programs, and oversaw all accounting functions including those necessary for auditing, budgeting, financial analysis, capital asset and property management, as well as payroll, the town said.

Czyz also handled all aspects of human resource management for 75 employees. In addition she maintained effective systems of internal controls to account for all receipts and expenditures of funds, managing corporate funds to maximize the earnings under federal regulations.

Czyz earned a B.A. Degree in 2013 in multidisciplinary studies, with a 3.94 GPA from Cambridge College. She has a successful background in financial planning and operations management.
