Somers Approves $6.19M in Capital Projects in Election Day Referendum

Somers will be getting a new firetruck, road repairs, roof repairs and more following the municipal election on Tuesday.

All four of the referendum questions surrounding a total of $6.19 million in tax-payer funded projects such as school roof repairs and a new firetruck passed during the 2013 municipal election on Tuesday.

Unofficial results show that residents approved by a vote 1,062 to 982 to appropriate $3.1 million on road improvements to Mount Road and Somerset Lane. This was the closest vote among the four referendum questions.

A $2.47 million project to fix the roofs, installing fire alarms and improving generators at Somers Elementary and High schools got more support. Somers residents approved this item by a 1,590 to 478 vote.

They also approved, by a vote of 1,403 to 645, to spend $565,000 toward the purchase of a new Somers Fire Department tanker truck and Somers ambulance and by a vote of 1,508 to 414 the $53,000 toward the purchase of a Somers Senior Center shuttle bus.
