Somers Comes Up Short In Bid For State Lacrosse Championship
The Spartans fell in the Class S finals to top-seeded New Fairfield for the second consecutive season.

FAIRFIELD, CT — The CIAC Class S boys lacrosse final Saturday at Fairfield University may have been a rematch of last year's title tilt, but other than the teams involved and the ultimate result, it was considerably different than the 2024 encounter.
Last season, New Fairfield pitched a 7-0 shutout over Somers in the championship contest at Sacred Heart University. This time around, the venue shifted to Fairfield University, and the opening minutes seemed to signal deja vu for the Rebels, who grabbed a 3-0 lead before the midpoint of the first quarter.
At that point, the script from last season was altered, with Somers closing the deficit to 3-2 with goals by Andrew Cardwell and Harry Accorsi in a two and a half minute span extending into the opening of the second quarter. Momentum seemed to be on the side of the Spartans, but the Rebels regrouped and demonstrated why they are one of the most dominant teams in the state.

Just nine seconds after Accorsi's goal, New Fairfield retaliated with another tally to make it 4-2. Three more goals followed in a 95-second stretch to extend the Rebels' advantage to 6-2.
Accorsi netted his second score of the game to make it 8-3, but New Fairfield put one home just 16 seconds before intermission to assume an 8-3 lead at halftime.

After the break, the Rebels resumed their championship quest with three consecutive goals for an 11-3 margin. Cooper Leonard got one back for the Spartans in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but New Fairfield iced its 14-4 victory with the game's final three goals.
Josh Krueger paced the high-powered New Fairfield offense with five goals. The Rebels won their fifth state championship overall, while Somers, which has also claimed five titles in the past, sought its first crown since 2017.
