Somers Middle Schooler Wins Connecticut Spelling Bee
Julia Settevendemie, of Somers, will represent Connecticut at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the state championship.
SOMERS, CT — A Somers middle schooler won this year's Connecticut Spelling Bee over the weekend, and she will represent the state at the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer.
Julia Settevendemie, an eighth-grader at Mabelle B. Avery Middle School in Somers, took first prize among the 30 fourth- to eighth-graders who competed in the spelling bee, the Journal Inquirer reported.
The spelling bee took place at the University of Saint Joseph's Hoffman Auditorium on Sunday.

To make it to the statewide tournament, the competitors (including Settevendemie) had already won their schoolwide or townwide spelling bees, officials said.
A total of 7,094 students in grades 4 to 8 took part in the spelling bee this year, and the competitors in West Hartford had placed in the top 30.

The 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held on June 1 and 2 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
