Somers Voter Turnout Above State Average; Ellington Below It

The final official numbers are in, showing how Ellington and Somers stacked up against the rest of the state.

The statewide voter turnout for the 2013 municipal elections was 31.43 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

And, when looking at the final voting tallies, Somers beat out Ellington this year for a higher turnout.

A total of 2,273 Somers residents head to the polls on Nov. 5, or 36.6 percent of the 6,384 registered voters. In Ellington, just 2,415 of that town's total 9,594 — or 25.17 percent — of registered voters showed up at the polls. 

Both towns had notable first selectmen races this year. In Ellington, Republican and two-term incumbent Maurice Blanchette beat a former Democratic state representative, Ted Graziani, by just 28 votes.

In Somers, two-term incumbent Republican Lisa Pellegrini beat an independent challenger, former Tax Collector Donna Doyker, 1301-861.

More voters actually came out to the polls in Ellington and Somers in 2013 when compared to the 2011 municipal elections, when the the turnout was 24.25 percent and 34.27 percent respectively, according to the 2011 figures.

The turnout was even higher in the 2009 local elections, with Ellington coming in at 37.5 percent and Somers at 37.9 percent.
