Although the introduction of armed guards to Enfield's public schools has been a success, per Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Schumann, some residents in town still find issue with how the guards were approved.
As a result, a petition of nearly 3,000 signatures had been submitted to the town clerk's office, seeking a town-wide referendum on the armed officers, according to a WFSB report.
The referendum result would trump the town council's vote of approval for the guards.
According to the Hartford Courant, exactly 2,865 signatures were collected, which is 300 more than the 2,500 needed for the petition to be valid.
The town clerk's office must now validate each signature on the petition.
Enfield Democrats, according to the Courant, voted to endorse the petition Wednesday night.
