A Fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence Friday after the car he was allegedly operating struck a telephone pole, police said.
Responding officers arrived at the scene of the accident at Holland Hill Road and Home Street late Friday to find the car had been abandoned, Deputy Police Chief Chris Lyddy said. They attributed the accident to the wet conditions caused by Tropical Storm Andrea.

Officers were able to track down the person they believe was driving the car near the scene of the accident. The operator and sole occupant of the car -- identified as Theodore Guest, 22, of Edge Hill Court -- appeared intoxicated, police said, and failed three field sobriety tests.

Guest was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right, and evading responsibility. He was released after posting a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
