Letter To The Editor: Constables Provide An Important Role

A Fairfield constable writes about why he is voting no on Charter Revision.

To The Editor,

I have been a Constable for the Town of Fairfield Probate Court for Seven Years. As Constables we provide an important role in the everyday lives of our fellow citizens. We ensure that our cherished older population, our parents and grandparents are provided the legal protection they deserve after being good honest tax paying citizens during their lives in Fairfield. They have been our examples in life and now is the time to help them during their last years. The First Selectwoman, in her Charter Proposal wants to reduce the number of Constables from Seven to Four. She also wants them to be appointed by the Office of the First Selectman and not elected by the people as has always been the case. This proposal makes no sense at all. The Town of Fairfield keeps on adding population and will soon be near the Seventy thousand mark in total citizens. With that upsurge the need for the services of the Probate Court will be greater than ever. We actually will need in the near future up to eight to ten Constables to keep up with the demand of the Probate Court. Please, Fellow Fairfielders, do not let this administration take away your right to elected officials and town government that runs smoothly. Vote No on Charter Revision on November Eighth.
