Police: Unionville Woman Stole Credit Cards from Multiple Stop & Shop Customers

A local woman arrested last week after a credit card theft at the Unionville Stop & Shop confessed to police that she stole credit cards three times at the location. 

Jayne Lynne Spagnolo, 26, of 1712 Farmington Ave., Unionville, was arrested on a warrant at her home at 12:22 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 in a second case of credit card theft. 

She stole the credit card from a Farmington woman's purse while she was shopping at the grocery store, Farmington police Lt. Colin Ryan said. The woman targeted, who was a different victim than the previous case that led to a previous July 29 credit card theft arrest, canceled her credit card.

Spagnolo used the card to purchase a carton of cigarettes at a Unionville gas station, Ryan said.  

How can shoppers ward off lingering thieves? Ryan gives this guidance about how to protect yourself from having on-hand valuables like credit cards stolen.

"My advice in this type of case is to not leave your wallets or purses unattended for any length of time," Ryan said. "At a minimum people should have their purses zipped up.  Also, pay attention to your surroundings, be aware of your belongings."

Police charged Spagnalo with credit card theft, criminal impersonation, third-degree forgery, third-degree identity theft, illegal use of a credit card, sixth degree larceny and the receipt of goods or services obtained illegally in the most recent case. 

The police held her in custody on a $35,000 surety bond. Spagnalo was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 6.
