World-Famous Pizzeria Eyes Mall In Farmington/West Hartford

A Massachusetts-based contractor has taken out a building permit application to build a new pizzeria inside the mall.

FARMINGTON/WEST HARTFORD, CT — Folks debating about what kind of pizza to order have some time to figure it out, but it appears the Westfarms Mall may soon have a world-famous pizza place under its roof.

According to Town of Farmington records, a Massachusetts-based contractor, James J. Welch & Co., out of Salem, Mass., has taken out a building permit application for a large project at 500 South Road, Farmington.

That address just happens to be the Westfarms Mall, whose massive footprint straddles the West Hartford/Farmington town line.

And on that application is the world-famous "Sally's Apizza," whose main restaurant is located in New Haven, part of Elm City's famously delicious pizza scene.

The permit application says the project is a $1.4 million interior overhaul of vacant commercial space inside the mall.

A Jordan's Furniture store is moving into Westfarms late this year or early 2024 and the new pizza place is expected to be within that store.

The furniture retailer regularly offers various amenities within its retail outlets like food and amusements.

The prospects of Sally's Apizza restaurant going into the mall would mean the second pizza chain to move into the busy shopping destination.

In February, a Pizza Hut fast-casual dining eatery opened inside.

Sally's Apizza has three restaurants in Connecticut, with New Haven, Stamford and Fairfield already open.

However, it is planning a major expansion of eateries, with sites in Newington, Wethersfield, Norwalk, Woburn, Mass., and Boston Seaport, Mass., "coming soon," according to its website.

The proposed site in the mall is not indicated yet on the website.

The famous, New Haven-style pizza features thin crust pies and fresh ingredients.

To better explain what this type of pizza is, here's what Sally's Apizza wrote on its website: "Handmade, coal-fired, sauce-forward pizza on a thin, crispy, and chewy crust – charred, not burnt. It’s pronounced 'ah-beetz.' Get it right."
