GLASTONBURY, CT — To reduce tree-related power outages, energy provider Eversource will spend the next three months trimming and removing trees near electric lines in Glastonbury.

Crews are pruning trees near electric lines along around 54 miles of Glastonbury roads, and are removing tall-growing and incompatible plants as well. Work is expected to be finished by the end of April.

The tree removal is taking place on the following residential Glastonbury roads:

All contractors carry proper identification and will never seek to enter a private residence, officials said.

The tree removal is free to property owners, though Eversource is reminding homeowners that they are responsible for tree maintenance on their own properties — including keeping branches away from the lower-voltage service wires that connect their homes and properties to main utility lines.

The company "strongly recommends" hiring a professional tree service to perform that removal work.

Eversource is also still working on previously-announced tree work on rights of way in Glastonbury, which should be finished by early February. That work is being done in these areas:

  • New London Turnpike
  • State Route 2
  • Hebron and UConn avenues
  • Feldspar Ridge
  • Hollis Landing
  • Woodland and Bell streets
  • Accornero, Johnny Cake, Juniper and Margaret lanes
  • Juniper Lane West

  • Belle Woods, Candlelight, East Opal and Hawthorne Mead drives

"A consistent tree trimming program helps to improve day-to-day reliability during all types of weather. As a result, we continue to see fewer power outages where this work has been done,” said Sean Redding, Eversource Manager of Vegetation Management in Connecticut. "While we all love our trees, they can have a devastating effect on the electric system, especially during a storm, that's why this work is so vital."
