The fraudulent invoices are sent by U.S. mail and are designed to closely resemble those generated through the OpenGov permitting system., officials said. The invoices claim to be from the town and request a "payment" to move applications forward, officials said.

The scam artists are using publicly available information to make their communications appear legitimate, like town staff members and applicant addresses, officials said. Typically, permits are issued for a fee, paid when they are issued.

"Citizens are advised that the town of Glastonbury does not send hard copy invoices by mail, nor do we offer fees to expedite permits, officials said. "The town is not aware of any fraudulent invoices received by Glastonbury residents. However, all permit applicants should be mindful of this scam. Town of Glastonbury staff are currently working with OpenGov to add warning messages within the platform to further educate system users about these deceitful practices."

Officials said anyone receiving a suspicious invoice by mail, can contact the Glastonbury Police Department at 860-633-8301. Questions regarding permit payments can be directed to the Glastonbury Building & Zoning Department at 860-652-7521.
