Glastonbury Police Hosting Situational Awareness Workshop

In response to public concern, the department will touch on the factors affecting one's situational awareness in a presentation this week.

GLASTONBURY, CT — In response to an uptick in public concern, the Glastonbury Police Department is hosting a workshop designed to help the public improve its situational awareness.

The Situational Awareness Workshop will take place on Feb. 3 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Glastonbury Police Department. Attendance is free and open to anyone.

Officer Michael Magrey called the event a "public service," and he said it will consist of a presentation followed by a participant discussion.

It will touch on three areas, he said: How preconceptions on crime, environment/present moment comprehension and decision-making abilities affect individuals' situational awareness.

Each of those areas affect one's ability to pay attention to — and respond to — their surroundings, the department said on Facebook.

"We are always looking for ways to meet the needs of citizens, and there has been (s)ome concern in this area lately," Magrey told Patch.

Magrey, who frequently talks with the community as a Community Outreach Officer, said over the last year the public has been more concerned about their personal safety than ever before.

"I felt compelled to do something when citizens were saying they did not feel safe in their homes after a woman was shot at while interrupting thieves trying to steal her vehicle," Magney said.

He said the department will likely host similar presentations in the future, assuming public interest remains high.

Anyone interested in attending the workshop is asked to contact Officer Magrey at michael.magrey@glastonbury-ct.gov to let the department know they're coming, though pre-registration isn't required.
