In Memoriam: Madelyn A. Hammel

The Glastonbury resident passed away Jan. 1 at the age of 77.

Madelyn A. (Bowen) Hammel, 77, of Glastonbury, formerly of Mystic, died Friday January 1, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Glastonbury.

Born September 9, 1938 in Bridgeport, daughter of the late John A. and Marion (Morganroth) Bowen, she had lived in Connecticut all her life, residing in Fairfield until she moved to Mystic in 1988.

Madelyn graduated from Lauralton Hall and the Fones School of Dental Hygiene. She worked for many years as dental hygienist until she earned her M.Ed. and joined the faculty at University of Bridgeport. Prior to her retirement she was a department head for the State of Connecticut where she ran dental assisting programs.

Madelyn was an involved member of St. Patrick’s Church in Mystic, where she taught CCD and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and an active ACTS sister. During her retirement, she was busy travelling, teaching defensive driving for AARP, bookkeeping and being a nanny. “Miss Lyn” has a special place in the hearts of the Legg Family.

Madelyn was predeceased by her husband Walter Murren and is survived by her two daughters Beth Lundy and her husband Dan of Glastonbury, Marikate Murren and her wife Cathy McGillicuddy of Enfield, three “sister” cousins, Nancy Kelly of Seminole, FL, Janice Wolfe of Milford, and Eunice Royston of Old Saybrook and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Jonathan and David Lundy.

“Grammie” was a big part of her grandchildren’s lives and could be seen at soccer matches, hockey games, concerts and many other activities.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Rd., Glastonbury. Friends may call at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury on Wednesday, Jan. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m.
