State Rep. Srinivasan Tours Women's Health Facility

Srinivasan said he wants to foster better relationships with community health care providers.

To gain a better understanding of services offered by ABC Women’s Center, State Rep. Prasad Srinivasan (R-31) toured the facility and met with their Executive Director Molly Hurtado, and RDMS Ultrasound technician Kerry Johnson.

“My goal in visiting a nonprofit agency, like ABC Women’s Center, is to build relationships with providers in our community and listen to their concerns about potential legislation that may have an impact on women’s health issues,” said Srinivasan, who serves as Ranking Member on the legislature’s Public Health Committee.

For more than 25 years, the center has offered free and confidential services to clients, assisting them in their decision-making during and throughout a woman’s pregnancy including testing, educational, and counseling resources. Services are available post-pregnancy through the first year of the infant’s life.

ABC Women’s Center offers free pregnancy tests, prenatal vitamins, and limited OB ultrasounds during the first trimester, as well as many other services, in a welcoming setting. Dr. Daniel O’Neill, who practices at Day-Kimball Hospital, volunteers as the Medical Director overseeing ABC’s medical staff. Following treatment, patients are provided a referral list to area OB/GYNs and are welcome to continue educational services with the center, post-referral. ABC staff also makes referrals to community agencies for additional support when needed.

Srinivasan also said, “Centers such as this are important to our communities because they provide quality care and resources to expectant mothers in need. When a woman finds out that she is expecting, it is a life changing event and immediate medical care is vital to the health of the mother and the growing baby, and there are many decisions that need to be made.”

Srinivasan added, “ABC Women’s Center is well-equipped with the educational, medical, and referral resources needed for early intervention and connecting their patients to quality medical care.”

The center serves approximately 300 women each year, the majority of whom are from Middlesex and Hartford Counties. The majority of the clients are between the ages of 17-27.

ABC Women’s Center is funded 100% by private foundations. No assistance is taken from the federal or state government, or municipalities. Instead, local organizations like the Catholic Diocese, which provides a yearly grant for cribs, and the Knights of Columbus, which recently raised funds for the purchase of a new, state of the art, portable laptop ultrasound machine, are major supporters and contributors.
