The Town of Glastonbury is currently seeking candidates to fill several vacant volunteer positions on the Fair Rent Commission.

The Fair Rent Commission is established pursuant to Section 7-148b through 7-148f of the General Statutes of Connecticut, and Section 802 of the Town Charter. Appointed by the Town Council, the commission “shall consist of seven (7) electors and residents of the town and include an equal number of landlords and tenants with a minimum of two (2) each.” The Executive Director of the Glastonbury Housing Authority serves as the staff liaison to the Commission. Meetings are held annually for organizational purposes and additionally as needed.
Per the Town Charter, current vacancies must be filled by non-democratic candidates to maintain an equal balance of political party representation. Additionally, interested applicants must own or rent, (landlords need not apply), to maintain equitable representation among active members.

Fair Rent Commission Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform studies and investigations, conduct hearings, and receive complaints relative to rental charges on housing accommodations […] to control and eliminate excessive rental charges
- Carry out the provisions of G.S. §§ 7-148b to 7-148f inclusive, G.S. § 47a-20 and G.S. subsection (b) 47a-23c(b)
- Order rent reductions, repairs, and other actions as deemed necessary to ensure fair and equitable housing accommodations
Note: Members of the commission shall serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for necessary and actual expenses incurred in the performance of their official duties.
