First Selectman Camillo Warns Storm Could Impact Greenwich

GREENWICH, CT — First Selectman Fred Camillo is urging residents to be cautious as heavy rains and wind could impact the area on Saturday because of Tropical Storm Ophelia.

Greenwich Emergency Management Director Joseph Laucella has said that the current forecast is for rain to start in Connecticut around midday on Saturday with a Northeast wind increasing to around 20 to 25 mph. That could well include gusts of 35 to 40 mph along the coast on Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening.

The rain and wind is expected to slowly taper off Saturday night and on Sunday as the storm weakens to our south. The total rainfall is expected to range from 1 to 3 inches across the state with the higher amounts along the coast.

While the winds are considered unlikely to cause significant tree damage there could be minor urban flooding due to the heavy the heavy rainfall as well as coastal flooding. Northeast winds could persist over Long Island Sound for a few tide cycles and that could have an impact here in Greenwich.

The forecast currently predicts a storm surge of 1.5 to 2 feet, which could cause minor coastal flooding during times of high tide which would be around 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Some additional minor coastal flooding is also expected during the times of high tide on Sunday.
