Greenwich To Activate Cooling Centers For Heat Wave

High temperatures are expected to impact the area over the next few days.

GREENWICH, CT — First Selectman Fred Camillo will activate several cooling centers around town for residents looking to beat the heat over the next few days.

The opening of the cooling centers coincides with the state's activation of its heat-related protocol starting Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are forecast to be in the high 80s on Tuesday and into the 90s on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and into the weekend.

Connecticut's "Extreme Heat Emergency Management Protocol" is scheduled to be in effect from 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, until 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 30.

Greenwich's libraries and the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center will be open during their regular hours, as will Town Hall. The Greenwich Public Safety Complex’s Margenot Atrium will be open 24 hours for public access if needed.

These facilities will be available to any resident who needs a respite from the heat or needs to charge small electronics, like phones or laptops.

  • 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Monday through Thursday
  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Friday & Saturday
  • 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Sunday

Perrot Memorial Library, 90 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich

  • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.: Tuesday & Thursday
  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday. (Closed Sunday)

Byram Shubert Library, 21 Mead Ave.

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday
  • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Tuesday
  • 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Thursday. (Closed Sunday)

Cos Cob Library, 5 Sinawoy Road, Cos Cob

  • Noon – 8 p.m.: Monday.
  • 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.: Tuesday – Saturday. (Closed Sunday.)

Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center, 449 Pemberwick Road

  • 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Monday through Friday
  • 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.: Saturday
  • 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Sunday

  • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Weekdays (Closed Saturday and Sunday)

The Town’s Department of Health is reminding residents that heat-related illnesses are a public health threat and that all residents, especially persons who are young, elderly, have medical or mental health conditions, use medications that impede body temperature regulation, those who do not have air conditioning, or those whose work requires outdoor activities and people who are socially isolated, should pay special attention to the weather.
