Greenwich Ferry Service Suspended As Officials Monitor Potential Impacts Of Hurricane Erin

GREENWICH, CT — The Town of Greenwich on Wednesday announced that ferry service has been suspended as officials continue to monitor the potential impacts from Hurricane Erin.

While the storm remains out at sea and is not believed to make landfall in the region, effects could still be felt in Greenwich’s waters and along the shore.

As a precaution, ferry service to Island Beach and Great Captain Island has been suspended by the town's Department of Parks and Recreation for Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, Aug. 21.

According to an announcement from the town, no overnight campers will be allowed on the islands during this period and a decision will be announced on Thursday about the status of ferry service and camping for Friday and the upcoming weekend.

No other restrictions on access to town beaches are being put in place at this time, the town said.

The Greenwich Emergency Management Department will continue to monitor potentially dangerous surf conditions and, if needed, restrictions for public safety will be put in place.

Forecasts call for high wind gusts along the coast on Thursday with speeds potentially up to 40 miles per hour, the town said. The National Weather Service has put a gale warning in effect starting Thursday and through Friday.

There is a possibility of moderate coastal flooding during the high tide on Thursday, with a potential of one to two feed of inundation in vulnerable coastal areas.

The town is encouraging residents to take precautions if they are in vulnerable coastal areas of Greenwich.
