Parade, Bagpipes Will Honor Police Anniversary, Frontline Workers

GREENWICH, CT — A "grand parade" will march through Greenwich Avenue on Sept. 19, with two goals: To mark the 125th anniversary of the Greenwich Police Department's founding and to thank the essential workers who helped the town through the coronavirus pandemic.

The parade, called "The Wearing of the Green-wich Parade and Tattoo," will begin at 1 p.m. that Sunday. It be followed by a Bagpipe Tattoo (the word for a mass gathering of bagpipe bands) with food and refreshments served by local vendors, according to a listing for the event on Facebook.

"There will be Irish step dancers and a bagpipe exhibition with a Mass Bagpipe Band!" the event posting on Facebook reads.

The event is being hosted by the Greenwich Police Emerald Society & Combined Organization of Police.

Greenwich Police Captain Jim Bonney did most of the organizing, and the Greenwich Free Press reported that the celebration stemmed from Bonney's longtime dream of an event with multiple bagpipe bands.

While organizing the tattoo to celebrate the police department, the Free Press reported, Bonney saw an opportunity to honor Greenwich's frontline and essential workers as well.

"During the pandemic, a lot of people were able to stay home and be protected," Bonney told the news outlet. "But for all the people who were at home safe, there were people put at risk who were keeping life and society working."
