By enacting the snow emergency, the Greenwich Department of Public Works and its contractors will be able to clear town roadways more effectively.
Residents are advised to park their cars in their driveways or in their yards. Residents also may use municipal parking lots.
The town also announced that the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility will be closed to residents on Saturday, Jan. 29.
By town ordinance, Greenwich property owners are required to be responsible for keeping all sidewalks along their property clear of snow and ice.
Greenwich prohibits plow contractors from pushing snow from driveways or parking lots onto town streets. This practice is dangerous and impedes the town’s snow removal efforts.
If there is no other alternative to pushing snow into the street, the private plow driver must plow off the windrow left across the street by re-plowing until the road is safe.
Restaurant operators also are responsible for cleaning the sidewalk along the front of their respective property. Businesses with handicapped parking stalls in front of their storefronts are responsible for clearing access from the stall to the sidewalks.
The town is requesting residents to also clear nearby fire hydrants while they're out shoveling. Doing so can help save precious time in the event of a fire.
Capt. Mark Zuccerella of the Greenwich Police Department said there will be more personnel working this weekend to respond to the storm. The town's Emergency Operations Center will be open and conducted virtually.
Should residents lose power, the Greenwich Public Safety Complex at 11 Bruce Place will be open as a warming center. Face masks are required inside.
