Burning Question Of The Week: Should Groton Borrow $11.2 Million To Repair Roads?
Opponents say it adds interest costs; Supporters say it allows long-term planning

The Town Council voted this week to go forward with a referendum question that would ask taxpayers to authorize $11.2 million in bonding to fix Groton’s roads.
Of the total, $3.54 million would be spent on roads in Groton City; $986,000 would be spent roads in Groton Long Point; $6.36 million would be spent on roads in the town; and about $300,000 would be spent on financing costs.
The ordinance would appear on the November ballot if Representative Town Meeting agrees.

Scott Aument, a member of Representative Town Meeting, said this week he believes Groton should fix its roads, but not with a bond that adds interest costs.
But councilors who support the measure said the current system doesn’t work. They said each year during budget deliberations, road are the first to go, and then nothing gets done or it costs more later.
