Congressional Subcommittee Rejects BRAC
Subcommittee Voted On 2013 National Defense Authorization Act

A Congressional subcommittee has approved a 2013 National Defense Authorization Act that does not include another round of base reviews for potential closure, U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney said in a news release Friday.
Courtney said the action of the Readiness Subcommittee , which stands for Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
Groton’s sub base was targeted for partial closure during BRAC in 1993 and total closure in 2005, and local officials have been worried about another review.

“For all intents and purposes, passage of the mark signifies an official, on-record, bipartisan rejection of the plan,” Courtney said. “From the moment it was floated as an idea, the shadow of BRAC has been a pointless distraction from the real and serious job at hand: producing a balanced approach to the nation’s fiscal challenges that provides for a strong national defense."
