Daily Five: The School Board And An Upcoming Budget Discussion

Five Things To Know Monday, April 9

1.  Today is Monday, April 9.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 57 degrees and a breeze of 23 mph, with gusts up to 38 mph. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low of 43 degrees.

2.  The Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. today in the school administration building on Flanders Road. Agenda items include the board's self evaluation.

3.  The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Town Hall Annex to consider the , along with budgets for outside agencies. Groton City and Groton Long Point are both seeking substantial increases, mostly to pave roads. Eleven agencies, like Big Brothers Big Sisters, are asking for a total of $57,000 in the coming fiscal year.

4.  The Groton Senior Center will offer a program on “edible gardening” from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday in the senior center. Wayne Henson, of Holdridge Farm Nursery in Ledyard, will speak about how to grow a garden. The program costs $5 and includes a light supper. To register, call (860) 441-6785.

5.  Groton Public Library is co-sponsoring a program with the Avalonia Land Conservancy this week about Connecticut's wetlands. Dr. Juliana Barre will give a presentation at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the library about wetlands, their importance, and how they have been protected over the years. The program is free and open to the public.
