Five Things To Know Thursday, April 12

1. Today is Thursday, April 12. The National Weather Service predicts scattered showers, mainly after 10 a.m., and a high temperature of 57 degrees. Tonight will be cloudy, with a low of 39 degrees.
2. Governor Dannel Malloy will speak at a ribbon cutting this morning for the new Pier 31 at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton. The 500-foot-long pier is double the width of the pier it replaced, so employes can work on both sides of a submarine. The construction project cost $36 million.

3. has distributed some of the $125,000 in awards to 150 employees who took part in a company program that encourages them to quit smoking, get a physical or use the Electric Boat pharmacy. Employees and their spouses were eligible for the program, called "It All Counts" if they had annual physical, took part in a health screening or filled a prescription at the Electric Boat Family pharmacy. Winners were drawn at random from the list of participants.
4. The University of Connecticut at Avery Point will hold a ground breaking at 10 a.m. on April 26 for its new student center as well as a ribbon cutting for its UConn Technology Incubation Program labratories.

The campus demolished the old student center in Janurary to make room for The $6.8 million project will be the first major construction at the campus in 10 years.
5. Noank Community Market will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on May 5. last summer, and transformed it into a cooperative market with organic products, a grocery, deli, bakery and a catering business. More than 80 of the 300 members have pledged loans. The market will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily.
