Daily Five: Ordinance Would Combine Voting Districts 4 and 5 in Groton

1. Today is Wednesday, May 23. The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 66 degrees and a chance of showers, mainly after noon. The low will fall to 58 degrees tonight and there’s a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms.
2. The Town Council voted Tuesday night to recommend an ordinance that would combine voting Districts 4 and 5 in Groton. The districts must be redrawn due to changes at the state level and councilors decided to combine the two local districts as part of those boundary changes.

Groton has eight voting districts. District 4 is the smallest with 1,196 registered voters. If combined, the new district would have about 3,600 voters, still fewer than Groton’s largest voting area, District 7.
3. will conduct spot checks on Friday, Wednesday and on June 1 to look for seat belt violations, child safety restraint violations and distracted driving. The spot checks will be at various, unspecified places in town. The minimum fine for seat belt violations is $92.

4. Major General Thaddeus J. Martin, of the Connecticut National Guard will hold a send-off ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on June 2 at the in honor of military groups preparing for deployment. The units being deployed are: 1109th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group, 11th Military Police Detachment (military working dog) and 928th Military Police Detachment (military working dog kennel master team).
5. The Groton Regional Theater is presenting live performances of “The Rocky Horror Show” next month at the .
