Daily Five: School Board, Town Council To Discuss Future School Construction

1.  Today is Thursday, July 12. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 81 degrees, and a low of 64 tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council and Board of Education will hold a joint meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex to hear an update on middle school consolidation and establish a school planning task force.

The idea behind the task force is to assemble a group of residents that can plan the next round of school construction. should focus on middle schools.

3.  The Groton Animal Foundation has started a program called “G.A.F. Kids”, geared toward children ages 10 to 12 to teach them about animals. The program is based on the Vet Volunteers series by Laurie Halse Anderson and focuses on what children can do to help local animals.

The first session, about the feral cat population in Groton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 21 in Groton Public Library. Children will see a trap used by animal control officers and talk about ways to solve the problem of homeless cats.

4.  The continues at 6 p.m. today at Esker Point Beach. The band Hope Road will play. Parking at Esker Point Beach is $10 per car or $5 for motorcycle, but there’s also free parking and a shuttle from Fitch High School. The concerts are alcohol-free events.

5.  The Groton Business Association will hold its next meeting from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. on July 19 at Mystic Healthcare and Rehabilitation on High Street. Admission is free. The meeting includes a business update and breakfast. Bruce J. Fafard, chairman of the Groton Economic Development Commission will speak.
