Daily Five: Town Council to Discuss City, Schools Budgets Tonight

1. Today is Feb. 12, 2013. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a west wind of 17 to 22 mph and a high temperature of 43 degrees. The low will fall to 26 degrees tonight.
2. The Town Council will hear from the City of Groton about its proposed budget, the Board of Education about its proposed budget and the Noank Fire District about its plans for the former Noank School at its Committee of the Whole meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex. Councilors also also expected to discuss whether to have a police presence in the public schools.
3. Details of the spring and summer Parks & Recreation programs are finalized and a new edition of "Discover" will be coming out soon. Staff are exploring the possibility of printing the publication without ads and still having it mailed to each household, according to a report by the manager of recreational services.

4. The Groton Senior Center provided 615 rides for 96 people this month, and meals on wheels served 1,109 meals. In addition, the kitchen at the senior center served 1,503 meals, bringing in $10,997 in gross revenue, according to a report by Senior Center Supervisor Mary Jo Riley.
5. Groton Public Library will host "Clever Crafters: It's All About Love" at 6 p.m. today at the library. Crafter Heather Shipley will lead the program to make gifts including handmade cards, envelopes and flowers.
