Daily Five: Town Council Will Discuss Police Station, Former Noank School Proposal

Five Things To Know, Tuesday, May 22.

 

1.  Today is Tuesday, May 22.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a high temperature of 68 degrees and a chance of showers, mainly before 10 a.m. The low will fall to 57 degrees tonight and there’s a 20 percent chance of rain.

2.  The Groton Town Council’s Committee of the Whole meets at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex, and will discuss topics including possible renovations to the town police station and a proposal by the Noank Fire District to take over use of the former Noank School.

. The police department is seeking $5.1 million to renovate the older part of the police station, which has not been updated since the building opened in 1977.

Councilors heard . Frank Socha, chairman of the fire district’s executive committee, said school could be used for fire district meetings, storage for the historical society, and gatherings of local groups.

3.  Groton Human Services has started taking applications for the rental rebates program. Residents 65 and older, and those who are permanently disabled who paid rent in Connecticut in 2011 are eligible. The program offers rebates of up to $700 for single people and $900 for married couples.

Last year, 542 people applied for rental rebates through Groton Human Services and the program paid an average of $471 per renter. For more information, call (860) 441-6760.

4. The Submarine Force Museum and VITAS Innovative Hospice Care® will hold an event to honor veterans from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton. The program, “To Honor and Remember,” recognizes veterans’ lives and their service to the community and the country. The public is invited to attend.

5.  The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut will hold its Annual Education Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. on May 30 at the Groton Inn & Suites. Guests will include student leaders from Fitch High School, Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School, Ledyard High School, Waterford High School and New London Public School.
