It's only going to get hotter, so Jared Shelton brought his two dogs and a neighbor's dog to Groton's dog park early, hoping to wear the crew out.

Other people had the same idea.

"He's bull-headed," said Julene Dickinson of Leo, her Staffordshire terrier. "He doesn't care. We've been out there like an hour, and he still wants to run."

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert and predicted widespread haze in Groton this afternoon, with a high near 82 degrees.
