Five Things To Know Today

The Former Noank School, Young Artists And Innovative Women

1.  Today is Thursday, Feb. 17.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, with a high near 44 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 35 degrees.

2.  The Noank School Reuse Task Force, the group charged with recommending what to do with the former Noank Elementary School, holds a special meeting at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex to discuss a survey of residents.

3.  Another task force is also conducting a survey to ask residents about a former elementary in Groton.  As of earlier this week, 114 people had responded to the online survey about the best use of the former Groton Heights School. 4.  The Connecticut Art Education Association, a non-profit organization for art teachers in Connecticut, organizes a statewide art show every year for children in grades K-12.  Children can participate by having their school art teacher submit their art work and fill out the forms posted on the organization's website here. The art show is scheduled for March 7 through 26 and is free for students to exhibit and family and friends to attend.

5.  The Connecticut Technology Council has announced the finalists for the seventh annual Women of Innovation Awards Program, which recognizes women who are role models and leaders in their profession or field of study. Among the finalists are Dorothy Goettler, an engineering specialist at Electric Boat Corporation and Janice Nykyforchyn, a principal engineer at Electric Boat.  Winners will be announced on March 31.
