Five Things To Know Today

The Cabin Fever Festival, Energy Efficiency And The Gong Show

1.  Today is Friday, Feb. 25.  The National Weather Service predicts rain and strong wind, with thunderstorms possible after 9 a.m. and a high near 49 degrees. Storms could produce heavy rain and wind gusts could be as high as 48 mph, the weather service said.  Rainfall could total 1 and 2 inches. Skies will clear gradually tonight, but it will remain windy. The low will be 23 degrees.

2.  If you're looking for something to do this weekend, check out the 8th Annual Cabin Fever Festival from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday in Olde Mistick Village.  There will be music and entertainment, and the Charity Chowder Cookoff benefits the Emergency Food Pantry at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. For more information, see the event listing here.

3.  The Task Force on Climate Change and Sustainable Community made four recommendations to the Groton Town Council this week, including that it establish a revolving fund for energy-saving projects in Groton. Money would be deposited into the fund from sources like energy rebates, then spent on conservation and energy-efficiency projects. Priority would be given to making existing buildings more energy efficient. The council is reviewing the suggestions.

4.  On the last Friday of every month, the Groton Public Library's Wii gaming system and board games are available from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. The teen game program is free and open to students in grades 5 to 12.

5.  Remember The Gong Show? This was the television program in the 1970s in which people performed various talents as part of a contest, only to be "gonged" off stage if they were too terrible. The Groton Senior Center is holding its own version of The Gong Show at 6:30 p.m. today in the senior center. If you stop in, we can almost guarantee you'll laugh.
