Five Things To Know Today

Snow, Kick Butts Day And The Reserve

1.  Today is Wednesday, March 23.  The National Weather Service predicts snow after 2 p.m., but little accumulation during the day and a high temperature near 41 degrees. Snow is also likely tonight, with a low temperature near 29 degrees, and 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible.

2.  Students in Groton will take part in "Kick Butts Day" today, a national effort to prevent and stop young people from smoking and using other forms of tobacco. Middle and high school students will organize community “learning stations” to educate others about the dangers of smoking and teach younger children about the risks of tobacco use. Last year, thousands of students across the country took part in the event.

3.  Town Councilor Frank O'Beirne, Jr. suggested Tuesday night that perhaps the council should consider holding less money in reserve during this year. The council's practice has been to hold about 7.5 percent in reserve, and Groton is about $453,000 short of that figure. O'Beirne said he knows the bond rating houses do not like to see reserves decline, but Groton is ahead of what the state requires.
