Five Things To Know Today

ZUMBA, The Groton Parent Council and Captain Kenneth Swan

1.  Today is Friday, April 8.  It'll be sunny with a high temperature near 52 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There's a slight chance of rain before midnight, but otherwise you'll see a mix of clouds and sun. The low temperature will drop to about 35 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council's Committee of the Whole continues its review of the budget at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Town Hall Annex. The council also has a budget review meeting scheduled at 6 p.m. on Monday.

3.  If you're trying to lose weight this spring, you could give ZUMBA a try.  The Groton Department of Parks and Recreation offers the program from 5:15 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. on Fridays.  ZUMBA combines Latin dances into a workout to burn calories. To see the event listing, click here.

4.  Two key school-related events are scheduled for early next week. First, the Groton Parent Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at S.B. Butler Elementary School in the Media Center. Second, Superintendent Paul Kadri gives a presentation on Phase II from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the Groton Senior Center.

5.  Captain Kenneth A. Swan, the commanding officer of the Submarine Learning Center, is turning over the post to Captain Emil C. Casciano on Friday, May 20.  Casciano is the director for training, tactical development and doctrine for commander,  Submarine Force Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. Swan will serve next as special projects officer for Vice Admiral John M. Richardson, commander of Submarine Forces, commander of Submarine Forces Atlantic and commander or Allied Submarine Command.
