Five Things To Know Today
The Education Budget, Archaeology And The Patrolman's Benevolent Association

1. Today is Wednesday, May 11. It'll be cloudy, with a high temperature near 60 degrees and a low near 47 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
2. Representative Town Meeting reconvenes tonight to discuss whether to cut the education budget, which could mean significant changes to the public schools. The Town Council approved a proposed $74.2 million education budget last month, or $683,000 less than the requested amount. The Board of Education chairman said then that cutting $2 million would force closure of a middle school or eliminate programs like all-day kindergarten.
3. The director of research for The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center will discuss the results of recent archaeological excavations at the Battle at Fort Mystic during program at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Town Hall Annex. Kevin McBride, also an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Connecticut, will explain how artifacts and historical accounts can be looked at together. 4. Groton Parks & Recreation, the Groton Public Library, and Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education are offering a family fishing course next week. A class will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at the library, followed by fishing at Long Pond in North Stonington from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 28.
5. Groton is already planning its July 4th parade. Former Groton City Mayor Dennis Popp will serve as grand marshal, and the parade theme will be "Proud to be an American."
