Five Things To Know Today

Back Taxes, Bringing Back The 4th And National Doughnut Day

1.  Today is Friday, June 3.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, with a breeze and a high temperature of 70 degrees. The low will fall to 47 degrees tonight.

2.  The Naval Submarine Base will commemorate the Battle of Midway during a ceremony at 9 a.m. today at the Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton. The Battle of Midway, fought June 4-7, 1942, was a decisive naval battle during World War II against the Japanese.

3.  Groton continues to make progress collecting back taxes. According to a report by the tax collector, American National Recovery Group has collected about $90,600 in delinquent motor vehicle taxes so far this fiscal year. Since March 2006, the town has collected about $879,400 in back car taxes owed, the report said.

4.  If you know U.S. History or just love the town's annual July 4 parade, check out the "Bring Back the 4th Contest" online to give Groton a chance to win a grant to support the festivities. The contest is a brief U.S. History quiz online at www.libertymutualgroup.com, and Groton gets one credit for each person who completes the quiz. The town with the most credits wins a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual to help pay for the parade.

5.  Today is National Doughnut Day, in case you notice ads for free doughnuts around town. The Salvation Army started celebrating doughnut day on the first Friday of June in 1938, and continued the tradition to recognize women who fed soldiers hand-made doughnuts during World War I and World War II, according to the Salvation Army website.
