Five Things To Know Today

Seat Belt Use, Road Resurfacing And The Mystic Marriott

1.  Today is Monday, June 13.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 71 degrees. Tonight we'll have cloudy skies, a slight chance of showers and a low of 56 degrees, according to the forecast.

2.  Groton Town Police issued 130 tickets for seat belt violations and 27 tickets for other violations like driving while using cell phones during the "Click it or Ticket" enforcement from May 23 to June 5, according to a report by the town manager.  Police also did a survey of driver compliance before and after the enforcement campaign. They found that motorist compliance increased from 89 percent to 92.5 percent.

3.  The Department of Public Works is getting ready for a resurfacing project on Poquonnock Road next month. The department has the state permits needed to begin work, and will take down a tree at 692 Poquonnock Road this week. Next week, it'll repair concrete sidewalks and create handicapped ramps at Village Lane.

4.  The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa during an event from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on June 28. Town Councilors have been invited to attend, and the event is billed as a business networking opportunity; tickets are $15 for members, and $25 for non-members.

5.  A mobile state medical assistance program will be in Groton from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 23 at the Groton Human Services building at 2 Fort Hill Road. The Rx-Xpress Bus provides screenings for programs including food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, Husky Insurance and prescription assistance.  Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling (860) 441-6760.
