Five Things To Know Today

Budget Cuts To Groton Public Library, The Town Council And The Mystic Schooners

1.  Today is Tuesday, June 14 -  Flag Day.  The National Weather Service predicts scattered showers,  a high temperature of 64 degrees and a low of 50 degrees tonight. Skies will clear some this evening.

2.  Groton Public Library could lose as much as $10,000 because of a cut to a state program called the “Connecticard grant.” The grant reimburses libraries that lend materials to residents of other communities, and Groton Public Library is one of the largest lenders to out-of-area residents. The library circulated 367,000 items during the 2010 fiscal year, 125,000 of which went to non-residents. Connecticard supports the library’s online catalogue system, computer literacy programs and computer learning center.  The library isn't sure yet how the cut will affect services.

3.  The Groton Town Council meets tonight and will discuss, among its topics, a potential tax abatement for the widows of police officers. Linda Schneider wrote a letter to the town in February asking that the tax measure be considered.  Schneider husband, Paul Schneider, was a captain for the Groton Town Police and died after suffering a heart attack in 1997.  Groton City Police Officer Bill Snyder, Fran Snyder's husband, was stuck by a car and killed on Eastern Point Road during a traffic assignment in 1994. Last week, Lt. Thomas Forbes, a 30-year veteran of the Groton City Police Department,  died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
