Five Things To Know Today

River Road, Babe Ruth Baseball And Scholarships

1.  Today is Wednesday, July 20.  It'll be sunny, with a high temperature of 79 degrees and a low of 66 tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

2.  Groton has signed a contract to rebuild River Road at Haley’s Brook, according to the town website. The contractor, Hugo Key and Sons, will start work on August 1 and expect to be finished by Sept. 2. From July 29 until the project is done, River Road will be closed to traffic, including bikers and joggers, at the Haley's brook culvert. For more information, call public works at (860) 448-4066.

3.  The boys in the Groton Babe Ruth Baseball league are on a roll. They've won their last three games, including a double header July 18 at Washington Park against Tri County 3. Groton is now 7 wins, 5 losses, and has one more regular game scheduled today against Tri County 2 at 8 p.m. at Washington Park. Playoffs start July 23.

4. Chelsea Groton Bank has awarded $14,000 in scholarships to students from local high schools.  Students were chosen based on academic performance, character and financial need. Awards of $1,000 each were given to students including: Jake Clark of Fitch High School, Ashley Gathers of Grasso Technical High School, Elizabeth Vantroba of Ledyard High School, Ryann Wyatt Tagle of Montville High School, Joshua Zurita of New London High School, Brandon St. Jean of St. Bernard’s High School, Emily Pinko of Stonington High School and Melanie Edson of Waterford High School.

5.  Two Groton students who graduated from Fitch Senior High School also received $2,000 scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The charity took in 400 applications and chose 22 local students. The Groton students, Meghan Brown and Cameron Gonzalez, will attend the University of Connecticut and Saint Michael's College, respectively.
